Don Logrado Wins the Cocles and Projects as Another Name to Watch in the Turf Distance Roster

The San Benito horse prevailed convincingly over Saphirus Blue in a 1-2 finish for trainer Carlos D. Etchechoury
The turf stayers' division is going through a unique phase, lacking brilliant standouts and with many horses looking to climb to the top. As happens with almost every step along the way, a new name emerged following a stakes race over the distance, this time with Don Logrado stepping up from the allowance ranks to capture the Cocles (L-2400 m, firm turf), the feature event of a highly interesting card held this Friday at the Hipódromo de San Isidro.
The son of Fortify capitalized on the light 54 1/2 kilos assigned to him, taking another step forward by convincingly defeating Saphirus Blue (Daniel Boone, 55 1/2), securing a notable 1-2 finish for trainer Carlos D. Etchechoury.
Lacking previous experience at the stakes level, the Stud-Haras San Benito homebred never panicked and bided his time from well off the pace set by the free-running filly Playa Chopera (Treasure Beach, 50 1/2), who opened up several lengths on the rest of the field.
In a race that saw few position changes early on, the real action began around the turn. Brian Enrique—who swept both stakes on the day—guided Don Logrado toward the center of the track to launch his bid. Once in the straight, the chestnut produced a strong rally, sweeping past the leaders around the 250-meter mark and drawing away to hit the wire 2 lengths clear of Saphirus Blue, who held a 3/4-length advantage over Maestro de Fe (Master of Hounds, 54) in third. Playa Chopera turned in an excellent effort to finish fourth, another 3 lengths back, stopping the clock in 2m30s70/100. Amuni (Tetaze), coming off a victory in the Clásico Antonio Cané (G3) at La Plata, could only manage fifth after a brief bid in the stretch.
Don Logrado is the fifth foal out of the imported mare Loufoque (Malibu Moon), a granddaughter of the legendary champion Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold), who produced the formidable stallion Pure Prize (Storm Cat) and carries the bloodlines of one of the finest Phipps families.
Don Logrado raised his stock with this victory in the Cocles, entering a division that will now begin to take shape through the major events ahead on the road to the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1).
