Forever Young and Sovereignty Have Arrived at Keeneland for the Big Showdown

The top two contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) have arrived in Kentucky and begun their countdown toward the highly anticipated showdown on October 31, with the Japanese standout already making his initial track appearance

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Expectation surrounding the upcoming $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on October 31 continues to build as two of its headline stars are now settled on-site at Keeneland. Japan's Forever Young (Real Steel) and America's Sovereignty (Into Mischief), the central figures in a long-awaited showdown, completed their respective arrivals in Kentucky and entered the final stage of preparation.
First to arrive was Forever Young, defending champion following his memorable victory in the 2025 edition at Del Mar. The standout colt conditioned by Yoshito Yahagi arrived Tuesday around 8:30 PM after flying from New York to Cincinnati and completing the remaining leg by horse van. He traveled alongside Shin Emperor (Siyouni), his regular training partner and companion.
On Wednesday, shortly before 8:00 AM, Forever Young made his initial track appearance on the Keeneland main surface. With Yuki Araki in the saddle, he jogged down the stretch before galloping a little over a lap at a easy pace under a tight hold.
The Japanese champion had returned to the United States in early September, basing himself at Belmont Park, where he captured the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). He remained in New York until last Sunday, when he turned in his final major work—drilling 800 meters in :49.65—prior to shipping out to Kentucky.
The challenge ahead for Forever Young carries historic weight. Beyond defending his crown, he aims to become only the second horse in history to record back-to-back victories in the Classic, a feat achieved solely by Tiznow (Cee's Tizzy) in 2000 and 2001.
Sovereignty Steps onto Kentucky Soil
Meanwhile, Sovereignty pulled into Keeneland around 6:00 AM on Wednesday following an overnight van ride from Saratoga. The Godolphin homebred traveled alongside stablemate Knightsbridge (Nyquist), a prime contender for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), among other members of Bill Mott's powerful stable.
Voted Horse of the Year in 2025 after capturing both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and the Belmont Stakes (G1), Sovereignty sustained his stellar form this season, highlighted by a dominant performance in the August 8 Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
The son of Into Mischief also breezed last Sunday over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga, working 1000 meters in 1:02.76. His first official track appearance over the Keeneland main track was slated for Thursday morning.
With both champion colts now comfortably stabled at the host track, the Breeders’ Cup Classic atmosphere is reaching a peak. Forever Young seeks to defend his title and further Japanese racing history, while Sovereignty looks to assert his dominance as the era's benchmark American thoroughbred.
