Despite the current economic climate—both domestically and globally—and the challenging math facing owners dealing with rising costs and modest purses, the season’s opening auctions continue to provide reasons for optimism, or at least help clear the dark clouds that the forecast had promised.

With steady rhythm and strong prices, Haras Abolengo held its Gran Venta Selecta this Tuesday under the (Arg) Sales hammer at the San Isidro Racecourse Tattersall. The hybrid format allowed for both in-person and remote bidding.

With only five lots failing to reach their reserve, a total of 61 yearlings sold for US$ 2,146,000, resulting in an average of US$ 35,180 and a median of US$ 30,133. These figures align closely with those seen last week at the Haras Vacación Gran Venta Selecta.

Beyond the top prices, the auction saw significant depth in the middle market, with several lots drawing five or six different bidders into extended duels. The lower end of the market proved more difficult, where some lots failed to attract the minimum required opening bids.

The session topper was the colt Got Skill, knocked down for US$ 129,600 to Stud Toroquemero (payable in 8 installments of US$ 16,200). Born early on August 15, the chestnut is from the second crop of the stallion Pneumatic(Uncle Mo) and boasts a powerful female line.

His dam is none other than Galicada (Halo Sunshine), a G1 performer on the track who has proven to be an exceptional producer. She is the dam of Galicado (Asiatic Boy), a Champion 2-Year-Old; Got Talent (Easing Along), winner of the Gran Premio Estrellas Juvenile (G1); Got Faith (Orpen), winner of the Clásico Asociación Cooperativa de Criadores de SPC (L); the stakes-placed Got Her (Easing Along); and Galicia Gold (Asiatic Boy), dam of the G1-placed Mi Confesión (Suggestive Boy).

The second-highest price belonged to a filly with a "blue-blooded" pedigree. Niña Cósmica, a daughter of Cosmic Trigger and the G1 winner Stormy Niña (Bernstein), was purchased for US$ 128,000 by Stud La Rosaura. Stormy Niña is a full sister to fellow G1 winners Stormy Nimble and Stormy Ninguna, and is already the dam of G1-placed Nicole Rye (Catcher In the Rye) and the granddam of Derby winner Niño Guapo (Catcher In the Rye).

Rounding out the top three was In House, a standout from the first crop of the champion Ivar (Agnes Gold). A half-sister to G1 winners Intense for Me (Fortify) and In Your Honour (Asiatic Boy), she was secured by trainer Nicolás Martín Ferro for US$ 120,000. Ivar himself was exceptionally well-received, with his five offered yearlings averaging US$ 64,800.

One additional yearling reached the six-figure mark: Paxy (Cosmic Trigger), a half-sister to champion Paulinho(Equal Stripes) and G1 winner Positive Mind (Equal Stripes). John Fulton Bloodstock placed the winning bid of US$ 101,600.
