The Latinoamericano scene continues to move at full speed, and in recent hours some news has emerged, the most notable involving Argentine jockey Gustavo Calvente. The accomplished professional has been engaged by Stud Los Leones to ride Daktari in the continental highlight on Saturday, October 18, at Hipódromo da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro.

Born in Argentina but racing as a Chilean representative, the Daddy Long Legs colt will contest the race for the second consecutive season, having finished last behind local Manyuz (Run Away and Hide) over Monterrico’s dirt in Peru last year.

Calvente is one of the active South American riders who already knows what it takes to win the Gran Premio Latinoamericano, having guided the Argentine Tetaze (Equal Stripes) to victory in the 2020 edition, held on the turf at Hipódromo de San Isidro just before the Covid-19 shutdown.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for me. I’m very happy and grateful to have been considered. Being part of events like this is important, both professionally and personally, so I’ll give everything to achieve the best possible result. I have good experiences in the Latino, and I hope to continue on that path,” Calvente told Turf Diario when confirming the news.

Daktari arrives with an excellent record in Chile, mainly on turf—the same surface he will face in Rio. Trained by Ximeno Urenda, he most recently finished second, a length and a quarter behind Torna (Cunco) in the Clásico Valparaíso Sporting (G3) at Viña del Mar. Previously, he had taken the Clásico Luis Aldunate C. (L) at Club Hípico de Santiago.

The 5-year-old now has six wins from 27 starts, including the Clásico Municipal de Viña del Mar (G3), Valparaíso Sporting (2024 edition), 173vo. Aniversario del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Valparaíso, and Candy Sun.

He has also finished second in the Clásico Alfredo L. S. Jackson (G3) and Carreras del 20 (L), and third in the El Derby (G1), Copa de Oro (G2), Clásico Otoño (G3), Clásico Primavera (G3), and Municipal de Viña del Mar (G3), among others.
