The Brazilian colt will make his North American debut this Saturday in the Del Mar Mile (G2), run on the turf for a $300,000 purse; now under the care of trainer Richard Mandella, he looks to extend the Brazilian operation's successful legacy in the North

DEL MAR, California (Special for Turf Diario).— A year after reaching the pinnacle of glory in his homeland, Sinselwill embark on a new chapter of his racing career this Saturday. The Brazilian-bred champion, winner of the 2025 Grande Prêmio Brasil (G1), will make his North American debut facing a formidable field in the Del Mar Mile(G2T), one of the marquee supporting events on the Pacific Classic (G1) undercard, carrying a $300,000 purse over 1,600 meters on the turf.

The presence of the Red Rafa homebred adds another layer of South American intrigue to a momentous afternoon at Del Mar, carrying deep emotional resonance. On that unforgettable afternoon at Gávea when Sinsel conquered the GP Brasil, he was ridden by Leandro Henrique, the brilliant jockey whose recent passing continues to cast a heavy shadow of grief across the entire region's racing community.

Sinsel subsequently landed in California to join the powerful barn of Richard Mandella, one of North America's most revered trainers and a long-standing ally of Red Rafa. The partnership has yielded substantial success, most notably anchored by Planetario (Il Doge)—another product born and bred by the Brazilian operation who, after starring in his home country, carved out a prominent place among the West Coast's elite turf stayers.

Now it is Sinsel's turn to attempt a similar path, though his debut will be anything but simple. The Del Mar Mileattracted 12 entrants and features numerous horses boasting proven backclass and graded stakes winning credentials, alongside a tactical lineup that promises a fast-paced affair from the break.

Much of the spotlight will settle on Cabo Spirit (Pioneerof the Nile), a 7-year-old veteran who comes off a agonizing head defeat behind Gold Phoenix (Belardo) in the Eddie Read Stakes (G2T) over 1,800 meters on July 26 over this same course. With over $1.4 million in earnings and seven wins from 43 career starts, he stands as one of the most battle-tested runners in the lineup.

His trainer, George Papaprodromou, understands that early speed could become a decisive factor, as Cabo Spirit is typically at his best when controlling the race from the front. However, he will not be alone in that ambition this time.

"Hopefully he can get the lead comfortably, though I doubt it," the conditioner admitted during the week. "I hope they don't go too fast and we can settle nicely. We'll see how everything unfolds when the gates open."

That concern is far from trivial. Flyover (Om), a two-time stakes winner on the turf for California-breds, and El Potente (Temple City), winner of two G3 events, are also forwardly placed runners, creating a scenario that could produce a sustained early tempo and open up closing opportunities for those coming from off the pace.

Cabo Spirit has shown the versatility to win from off the pace earlier in his career, but in recent years he has proven exceptionally dangerous when setting the tempo. Running on the lead, he captured the John Henry Turf Championship (G2T) in 2024, followed by victories in the American Stakes (G3T) and San Gabriel Stakes (G3T) in 2025.

Although winless in four outings in 2026, his recent runner-up effort in the Eddie Read showed him right back at the top of his game. "He ran a huge race and got caught right at the wire," recalled George Papaprodromou, who believes the gelding enters this assignment in even sharper condition: "He's tighter now."

The tactical execution will rest primarily in the hands of Hall of Famer Mike Smith, his regular pilot. "I'll leave that up to Mike," the trainer summarized.

It is against this demanding backdrop that Sinsel will make his North American debut. For the son of Alpha, it represents a major transition: a new country, a different style of racing, and rivals with extensive mileage on the Southern California turf circuit. Yet he arrives as far more than an unknown quantity.

His victory in the Grande Prêmio Brasil established him at the forefront of South America's staying division and validated Red Rafa's decision to test the waters in the United States once again, adhering to a formula they know intimate detail: sending their elite runners to California and entrusting them to Richard Mandella.

The precedent set by Planetario is impossible to ignore. Also a homebred for Red Rafa, he adapted rapidly to American racing conditions and secured multiple graded titles for Richard Mandella, proving that the farm's bloodlines can translate their high-class quality from Brazil to one of the most competitive circuits in world racing.

Starting this Saturday, Sinsel will attempt to write his own story.

And he will do so carrying a memory inextricably bound to his defining victory. Leandro Henrique was the pilot who guided him to stardom in the 2025 Grande Prêmio Brasil. Now, thousands of miles away from Gávea on a stage as iconic as Del Mar, that triumph takes on an even more poignant dimension.

Saturday marks merely the first step for Sinsel on American soil. But for Red Rafa and Brazilian racing as a whole, his presence in the Del Mar Mile represents far more than a routine debut.
