MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (Special for Turf Diario).-  Like in Argentina, the Triple Crown also got underway at the Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas this past Sunday with the running of the Polla de Potrancas (G3, 1600 m) and Polla de Potrillos (G3, 1600 m), contested on standard dirt.

It was a day dominated by Phillipson, with Benjamín Steinbruch’s silks shining brightly thanks to victories from Tantan Royal among the fillies and Tadow Star among the colts, both offspring of the notable Midshipman (Ubridled’s Song) out of mares by T.H. Approval (With Approval).

The substantial investment the stable made in securing the services of the Darley-owned stallion is now paying dividends, following the path set by Midshipman’s previous impact across South America.

Tantan Royal, a previous winner of the Clásico Antonio Marsiglia, never fell far behind the front-running favorite Grandinata (Trinniberg), who set demanding fractions of 22.80, 45.49, and 1:10.32. The pace eventually took its toll on the leader in the final 200 meters, allowing Tantan Royal to surge past unchallenged. Presented by Jorge Rey for trainer Antonio Cintra, the filly crossed the wire 1¾ lengths ahead of Voice Out (Outstrip), who also benefitted from Grandinata’s fading to claim second by a nose. The final time was 1:35.68, with Héctor Lazo displaying his usual skill in the saddle.

A short while later, Phillipson’s colors shone again as Tadow Star delivered a commanding performance. Having shown promise in nearly every prep race of the season, the Raimundo Soares-trained colt, ridden by Luis Cáceres, took command midway down the stretch, opening up decisively over the final 300 meters to win comfortably.

He crossed the line three lengths ahead of Zelenski (Vineyard Haven), with the Brazilian Goldcross (Goldikovic) another 1½ lengths back in third. The final time was 1:34.86, with fractions of 22.75, 45.44, and 1:10.30.
