LIMA, Peru (Special to Turf Diario).– It was a banner weekend for Argentine breeding at Hipodromo de Monterrico, where Stud Jet Set and trainer Juan Suarez enjoyed a stakes double that reaffirmed the dominance of Argentine bloodlines on Peruvian tracks. The biggest news came from Puppi’s Husband, who not only captured the Clasico Baldomero Aspillaga (G2), but also punched his ticket to the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) this coming April, to be held over the same track and distance.

Bred by Haras Vacacion, the son of Fortify and the prolific Dia Feliz (Roman Ruler) showed immense grit to hold off the late surge of Khamal (Mendelssohn), the most recent Derby winner, in a grueling stretch battle. Under the guidance of Carlos Trujillo, the 3-year-old colt took command and crossed the wire with a head advantage, stopping the clock in 2:01.78 for the 2,000 meters on a fast track.

There was a brief moment of suspense due to an objection lodged by the runner-up’s jockey, but the Board of Stewards dismissed the claim, confirming the third victory in just seven starts for the bay. Both Puppi’s Husband and Khamal(Mendelssohn) have now secured their spots in the Latinoamericano on April 26 at the Coloso de Surco, where they will face off once again.

Finishing 2 3/4 lengths behind them was the local runner Compasion (Southdale), while the G1 winner and fellow Argentine Super Corinto (Super Saver) completed the frame. The field was rounded out by Marc Rosso (Marconi), Buen Camino (Tale of Ekati), King Mo (Uncle Mo), the mare Boudica (The Lieutenant), Daddy Feres (Daddy Long Legs), Sultan Jr. (Tiz the Law), Il Omare (Il Campione), Happy Man (Mendelssohn), Kanko (Newfoundland), and Trudeau (Buenos Dias).

The Argentine harvest in Lima began on Saturday with the evergreen Super Omarcito, who scored a wire-to-wire victory in the Clasico Greek Prince (L). The Jet Set color-bearer, bred by Haras Firmamento, had little trouble dismissing King George (Boston) by 4 lengths in a race that was reduced to a match-up following the scratch of Alexander Magno (Cyrus Alexander).

A son of Super Saver and the G1 winner Stormy Vil (Bernstein), the 6-year-old bay was piloted to victory by Huber Bocanegra, marking his fifteenth win in 41 starts. It was the crowning achievement for an Argentine contingent that, under the hand of Juan Suarez, once again proved its class at the highest level of Peruvian racing.
