The Argentine stakes calendar for 3-year-olds is inherently unsustainable in its current structure, and unless deep, structural changes are enacted, major races will face an ever-increasing risk of degradation over time.
On Friday on the Palermo dirt, the Clásico Francisco J. Beazley (G2)—the traditional prep for the Gran Premio Selección (G1) for 3-year-old fillies—will take place. Just twenty-four hours later, on the San Isidro turf, the Clásico Federico de Alvear (G2-1800 m, turf) and the Clásico Empiric (1400 m, turf) are scheduled... both for 3-year-old fillies.
While the surfaces differ and overlap among the nominees is fortunately minimal, the Gran Premio Selección de Potrancas (G1) at Hipódromo de La Plata follows just days later. It is an outright absurdity.
The current scheduling conflict is troubling enough, but far worse is the complete absence of a concerted effort to resolve it—first, to eliminate such blatant oversights, and second, to protect the long-term integrity and grading of Argentine stakes races.
During the sole fixture slated for next week at the Jockey Club Argentino venue, the Alvear—the primary stepping stone toward the Gran Premio Enrique Acebal (G1)—drew 10 potential runners, headlined by Siesta (Cityscape), a two-time graded stakes winner at La Plata.
Doña Loca (Pneumatic), Fly Cast (Made You Look), Fuurin (Cima de Triomphe), Just Dance (Daniel Boone), La Magia Existe (Backyard Heaven), Oasis Moon (Dabster), Risk Free (Outstrip), Ruby Rose (Il Campione), and Valley Farm (Sovereign) round out the field.
Meanwhile, the prospective field for the Empiric features Antolina (Remote), Fly Cast, Gota Clara Sos (Made You Look), Kona Ice (Treasure Beach), La Magia Existe, Merecida Victoria (Edge of Victory), Poker Star (Cosmic Trigger), and Se Cruzan (Manipulator).
The card also includes several compelling maiden and condition events, though many remain at high risk of cancellation due to low entry numbers. Hopefully they hold together to deliver a competitive afternoon of racing.
Final entries and jockey bookings will be taken until Tuesday noon, with San Isidro releasing the official race cards later that afternoon.
