The Juddmonte runner, Cicero’s Gift, and Zeus Olympios headline a top-class field in a race that promises fireworks from the outset and has the look of a G1

ESHER, England (Special to Turf Diario).- There are races that, beyond their official status, transcend due to the quality of their participants. That is exactly what will happen this Friday with the bet365 Mile (G2), a race that, by names and level, shapes up as a true hidden G1.
The clash between Field Of Gold (Kingman), Cicero’s Gift (Muhaarar), Never So Brave (No Nay Never), Opera Ballo (Ghaiyyath), and the unbeaten Zeus Olympios (Night of Thunder) guarantees a thrilling start to the season at Sandown.
Field Of Gold, who redeemed himself after finishing second in the 2000 Guineas (G1) by winning the Irish version and the St James’s Palace Stakes (G1), stands as the logical benchmark, though not without pressure after closing out 2025 with defeats in the Sussex Stakes (G1) and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1).
That very last race produced one of the biggest upsets of the year, when Cicero’s Gift, at 100-1, sprang the surprise. Now they will meet again, though with a key difference: the Champions Day hero will carry a 5-pound penalty.
From the Never So Brave camp, there is confidence about being involved at the finish. “It may be a G2 on paper, but it looks like a G1,” said Philip Robinson, racing manager to Saeed Suhail. “In the QEII he didn’t have the best break or the cleanest trip, but I was impressed with how he finished. With a bit more luck, he would have been right there.”
Robinson also highlighted the colt’s development: “He showed that a mile is his ideal trip. Andrew (Balding) is very happy with how he’s coming into this, and we think it’s a great starting point for the season.”
The unbeaten Zeus Olympios adds another layer of intrigue. With four wins from four starts and the backing of Ryan Moore, the Karl Burke trainee arrives off a victory in the Joel Stakes (G2) and will look to confirm he is ready to take the next step.
“He’s a horse who has done everything right so far. He has quality and character,” they say from his camp, aware that this will be his toughest test.
Godolphin will be represented by the progressive Opera Ballo, who impressed at Meydan, United Arab Emirates, capturing the prestigious Jebel Hatta (G1), and his name will not go unnoticed.
In a small but explosive field, which also includes defending champion Dancing Gemini (Camelot), the bet365 Milewill not only determine the top miler of the moment but also begin shaping the path toward May’s Lockinge Stakes (G1) at Newbury.
Because when so many big names come together, labels matter little.
And at Sandown this Friday, they’ll be racing like it’s a G1.
