Following her brilliant triumph in the Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot, the ultra-talented Karl Burke-trained filly is set to face the ultimate test of her nascent career as she tackles older horses

NEWMARKET, England (Special for Turf Diario).— After dominating her own age group, the brilliant sophomore filly Venetian Sun faces the most demanding test of her career this Saturday as she tackles older rivals for the first time in the prestigious July Cup (G1-1,200m), the centerpiece of Newmarket’s traditional July Festival.

The daughter of Starman, trained by Karl Burke, arrives at the absolute peak of her form. Following a brief stakes campaign over a mile, her return to sprinting yielded two spectacular performances: first capturing the Sandy Lane Stakes (G2) at Haydock before confirming her immense potential with an authoritative victory in the Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot.

Now, however, the assignment reaches a completely different dimension. While she will benefit from the weight-for-age allowance, she must square off against the absolute elite of the European sprinting ranks.

The opposition is led by the battle-tested Almeraq (Dark Angel), fresh off a striking victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (G1), who must concede nine pounds to the filly. Also looming large is the Aidan O'Brien-trained Mission Central (No Nay Never), winner of the King Charles III Stakes (G1), who will spot Venetian Sun three pounds under the weight conditions.

The deeply competitive 11-horse field also features the progressive Double Rush (Blue Point), coming off a brilliant triumph in the Wokingham Handicap; Japanese raider Satono Reve (Lord Kanaloa), who missed by the narrowest of margins behind Almeraq at Ascot; and the ever-dangerous Big Mojo (Mohaather), runner-up in this very event twelve months ago. The lineup is completed by Division (Kingman), who finished just three-quarters of a length behind Venetian Sun in the Commonwealth Cup, Comanche Brave (Wootton Bassett), Coppull (Bated Breath), Quinalt (Oasis Dream), and Prince Of India (Wootton Bassett).

With a stellar cast assembled, the July Cup promises a spectacular edition and provides the ultimate stage for Venetian Sun to prove whether she is ready to establish herself as the new undisputed queen of speed in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abraham Lincoln Headlines the Superlative Stakes

The undercard features high-quality action, including the Superlative Stakes (G2-1,400m, turf) for two-year-olds, where the unbeaten Abraham Lincoln (Wootton Bassett) rules as the overwhelming favorite following a highly impressive debut victory at The Curragh. His primary challengers include Godolphin’s Al Hudaiba (Dark Angel), a winner over course and distance, and Pikachu (Frankel), who seeks to improve upon a fifth-place effort in the Chesham Stakes (L) at Royal Ascot.

Furthermore, the afternoon features the historic Bunbury Cup Handicap over 1,400 meters, where Aalto (Zelzal) and Elarak (Kingman) head the preferences in a wide-open and competitive field of 15 runners.
