MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (Special for Turf Diario).- Maroñas will be dressed for celebration this Sunday as it hosts a new edition of the Campeones Series, organized by the Asociación de Criadores del Caballo Puro de Carrera del Uruguay. Modeled after the Breeders' Cup in the U.S. and Argentina’s Carreras de las Estrellas, the 18th edition of the festival will feature seven stakes races, offering top-level competition across the board.

The highlight will be the Campeones Classic (2000m, dirt), for 3-year-olds and up, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. With 16 runners and one also-eligible, the field looks wide open, though Pluto stands out based on credentials. The son of Discreetly Mine, bred by Haras Phillipson, took this race in 2024 and, although below form in the Gran Premio Municipal (L), he was runner-up in the G2 General Artigas and finished fifth in the G1 José Pedro Ramírez earlier this year.

The Campeones Distaff (1800m, dirt), for fillies and mares three and up and sponsored by the Stud Book Uruguayo, will feature the country’s standout mare: Dale Flojita (Sloane Avenue). Victorious in the G1 Ciudad de Montevideo on January 6, she reaffirmed her dominance with a follow-up win in the G3 Clásico Diana.

The curtain-raiser for the series will be the Campeones Mile – Codere (1600m, turf), where Siempre Feliz (Will Take Charge) faces off against the durable veteran Justice Cat (The Leopard), who remains competitive. The finale will be the Campeones Sprint – Intendencia de Montevideo, with Capo Boss (Holy Boss) looming as the horse to beat.

Two-year-olds will also take center stage in three dedicated races: the Juvenile Sprint – Equidiet (1000m, dirt), the Juvenile Fillies – Walter H. Abelenda (1400m, dirt), and the Juvenile – Orb (1400m, dirt). With talent spread out, Cersei (King Humor), Grandinata (Trinniberg), and Sonic Teacher (Sonic Mule) look like the ones to watch.

Campeones takes the spotlight on a Sunday at Maroñas that promises high-class racing and top performances.
