Godolphin announced the conclusion of the extraordinary career of the son of Dubawi, a winner in 22 of his 32 starts and a victor in nine G1 events. A two-time champion of the Breeders’ Cup Turf and a leading protagonist across Europe, Dubai, the United States, and Asia, he closed his historic tenure with one final triumph at Newmarket

There are horses that win major races and others that also construct a story capable of crossing borders. Rebel’s Romance clearly belonged to the second group. Godolphin announced the retirement of its traveling star, one of the most successful and popular performers of recent years within the powerful royal blue organization.

The news arrived just a week after the son of Dubawi achieved his 22nd victory in 32 starts, taking the Princess of Wales’s Stakes (G2) on the Newmarket July course. At 8 years old, he still kept his competitive edge fully intact, but Charlie Appleby and his team understood that this final triumph offered the ideal stage to put an end to an exceptional campaign.

Rebel’s Romance retires with 9 G1 victories and more than 12,000,000 pounds accumulated in prize money between wins and placings. His greatest successes came around the globe, turning him into a true international flagship for Godolphin.

Among his most important achievements feature his two victories in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), achieved in 2022 and 2024, and his triumph in the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) of 2024. He also left his mark in Great Britain with highly valuable scores in the Hardwicke Stakes (G2) during Royal Ascot and in the Yorkshire Cup (G2), both during his final season.

"We always knew this day would come, but it is a very sad day for everyone at Moulton Paddocks and for Godolphin as a whole," Appleby expressed via the organization's official website. The trainer particularly highlighted the durability of a horse that remained at the highest level for several seasons and was capable of adapting to different countries, tracks, paces, and conditions. "Rebel’s Romance proved to be an extraordinary horse for many, many years and took us on a journey that we will never forget," he stated.

The victory at Newmarket ultimately tipped the scales. Following that performance, the Godolphin connections held discussions and agreed that it was the right time to close his campaign, allowing him to retire at the top of his game and with one final winning image.

"After another brilliant performance last week, we all discussed it and felt that now was the right time to bow out," Appleby explained.

Rebel’s Romance was also one of those horses particularly loved within the barn. Beyond his results, his temperament and professionalism turned him into a central figure for the Moulton Paddocks team.

"It was an absolute honor to train such an incredible horse. From the moment he arrived, he was a dream to look after. I must thank the whole team, who did an extraordinary job throughout his entire campaign," the conditioner added.

His popularity was another distinguishing feature. Rebel’s Romance generated admiration at every racetrack he visited and built a legion of fans that followed his journeys across Europe, America, the Middle East, and Asia.

"Wherever he was in the world, he was the horse that everyone asked me about. He generated a massive following and I was always thrilled by the reception he received in every location. You dream of having a horse like him and I am deeply grateful to have been part of his story," Appleby pointed out.

A large part of that career was shared with William Buick, his regular jockey and partner in most of his victories. The rider also dedicated words full of emotion upon learning of the decision: "Rebel’s Romance took me on wonderful adventures and I feel immensely privileged to have been able to ride a horse of his caliber," he commented.

The partnership between the two became associated with several of the most memorable days for Godolphin during recent years. Rebel’s Romance combined stamina, sustained speed, and a competitive will that allowed him to deliver even in adverse scenarios. "He proved time and time again that he was an extraordinary horse and I will cherish forever the moments we spent together. He was wonderful to ride, had a special presence and a huge will to win," the jockey added. Buick also remarked that the horse's campaign was the result of the joint effort of the entire Godolphinstructure: "It is a massive credit to everyone connected with him. His record around the world was phenomenal and I owe him a great deal," he concluded.

Rebel’s Romance says goodbye with statistics that explain only a fraction of his true dimension. He won 22 times, nine of them at the highest level, captured two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, and was capable of remaining competitive until the age of 8.

However, his greatest legacy perhaps lies in the footprint he left in every place he visited. He was a global horse in the broadest sense of the word, a figure who turned every trip into a new opportunity to confirm his class.

His final chapter could not have been more appropriate: victory at Newmarket in front of the British public and immediate retirement. Rebel’s Romance went out just as he lived a good part of his campaign: winning.
